When we think of our “needs”, we generally think of food, water, and shelter. But as we look at our lives on an everyday basis, we are missing the greatest factor, energy resources, which are fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are used to make our lives a whole lot easier. Without them, we wouldn’t have vehicles to take us to work, have heat in our house, have items with plastic in them, and tons of other things that we think we “need” in our everyday lives. So in this paper, I’m going to explain certain fossil fuels and energy sources and the pros and cons of these.
One of the types of fossil fuels that I will be talking about in this paper is Natural Gas. Natural gas is formed mostly of methane, which is a flammable gas and apart of the alkanet series in hydro carbons ("chemical of the week," ). Natural gas is a vital component of the world’s supply of energy, because we use it for so many things in our daily lives. (NaturalGas.org.2004). The bad part being dependent on natural gas is that natural gas is a nonrenewable resource. So if we don’t limit ourselves on using this fossil fuel, we could run out, and without an equal alternative, that means we’re in big trouble. A pro of natural gas is that is one of the cleanest, safest and most useful of all energy resources (NaturalGas.org.2004). Which again, being the most useful and being nonrenewable is a big issue that we need to resolve.
We get this fossil fuel by drilling in the earth’s crust. The process of drilling natural gas begins with preparing of the drilling of natural gas, the workers secure a rig and run final experiments, they also do environmental analyst. Then construction begins on the drilling rig and the drilling well. Next, the process of hydraulic fracturing takes place, this is where they make small fissures in rock that contain this natural gas, and it releases this gas. One the well is drilled, it can now produce natural gas. This well can produce natural gas for close to four decades (Exxon Mobil Corporation. 2003).
The cost of natural gas has been increasing over the years (InfoMine Inc. (n.d.). The import price for natural gas is now $3.99. Its export price is at $3.84. The electric power price for natural gas is now up to $4.99. (US. Department of Energy, 2013). Price of natural gas has gone up considerably over the past 3 months. (Barchart.com, Inc, 2013).
Natural Gas is harnessed and used for a lot of things in your household. Natural Gas is used to heat your water us, for cooking or bathing. Natural gas was first used in Great Britain around 1775, they extracted the natural gas from coal and used it to light their homes, which wasn’t good news for a candle salesmen. The gas has been used in street lights since 1816 when it was brought to Baltimore, Maryland. Natural gas is also used in plastics, fertilizer, anti-freeze, and some fabrics, so now you can see how useful natural gas is to us. (NaturalGas.org, 2004).
