Petroleum is a thick, flammable, yellow-to black mixture of gaseous, liquid and solid hydrocarbons. Petroleum can occur by nature beneath the earth’s surface, it can also be separated into different groups including natural gas, gasoline, naphtha and kerosene, Petroleum also has little sulfur .(American Association of Petroleum Geologists, 2008 -2012).
Petroleum is two to four Kilometers down in the ground; the mining of petroleum is very expensive to process and make. There are large numbers of organic compounds mostly soaked with hydrocarbons mixed with sea water and silt; petroleum can also be grouped into several useful products by fractional distillation (Khanna, 2013).
Petroleum has a cost on it, as of 10-21-13 petroleum is $99.22; the cost per barrel is $144. Retail price of heating up the oil on average is $3.68 per gallon. The average vehicle cost $8,003 per year to own and operate. The breakdown of the figure comes to $3,421 for purchasing the vehicle, $2,227 in gasoline and motor oil expenses, and $2,355 in other vehicle-related cost (smith, 2009).
Petroleum is used for transportation, it makes oil and it has been the leading source since the mid 1950’s. Petroleum is used for our cars to run and other transportation. Petroleum is formed from organic matter that come from (plants, animals, and microbes) that are buried deep below the earth’s surface by layer on layer of sediment. (David C. Kopaska-Merkel, 2013).
Petroleum is a compound mixture of organic liquids called crude oil and natural gas. It is complex mixture of carbon and hydrogen. Gases are passed through a distillation column which becomes cooler as the height increases. (Distillation oil refining, 2003)
The oil is piped into the boiler where the oil is burned. Then its chemical energy converts into heat energy, this heats the water in the pipes then it’s coiled around the boiler turning it into steam. The hot steam expands into narrow pipes, when it collides it’s under high pressure. After passing through the turbine, the steam comes into contact with pipes full of cold water. (EDF Energy, October)
The company that’s mining the oil needs a presidential permit from the Obama administration because the pipeline goes across the international border. It takes three barrels of water to extract one barrel of oil, people say that it’s going to waster the water. The climate-damaging emissions would be close equal to adding more than 5.6 million new cars to U.S. roads (friends of earth, 10/28/13).
If this is being used at current rate today we are using more petroleum each day and finding less of it. Bodkin says that it seems likely that oil production in the United States will end in 50 years or less. Oil that eventually will be legally and economically accessible, U.S. energy says that we might only have 1-4 barrels left. (B.Botkin, 2010).
