For a long time, English has been considered as a global language. David Crystal, British expert, says “Global language is a language spoken internationally by people who speak different language without replacing their native language” (David Crystal, 2003). Nowadays, people who speak other languages such as Mandarin have increased. Although there are some people who think English will be no longer the global language in the future, English will continue having the same power as now.
Opponents might say that Chinese people are increasing, so Mandarin should be the global language. According to Nationalencyklopedin and “the future of English as she was spoke,” people who speak Mandarin is about 95 million, and about 36 million people speak English as the first language. However, there are over billion people who use English as the second or third language. Nowadays, English speakers in developing countries also have been increasing. This is because they know that English is the key for development of the countries. The Guardian, the national daily newspaper in the United Kingdom, reported that language can increase the earning power of individuals by around 25% and that developing economies need access to English if they are to grow and position themselves in the global economy (“The Guardian: Research backs English as key to development” par. 1). Furthermore, because companies want to employ excellent people regardless of nationality, they recommend using English, according to “the Economist. Millennium Issue.” For these reasons, the number of people who learn English will still rise.
Even though some people say that learning English is difficult, English is not too difficult to learn compared to other languages. For example, David Moser, a scholar at the University of Michigan, said that the writing system for Mandarin is very complicated because it consists of a lot of symbols. Also, when comparing English to other language such as Spanish, which is used by about 400 million as the first language, Spanish has a lot of change in verb ending. Therefore, to learn the simple present tense of regular verbs in Spanish, people need to learn more than 15 different verb endings whereas English has only 2 differences such as adding “s” in the verb endings (“See Say English, Why Learning English is Easy,” par.3). Consequently, people tend to learn English and acquire the capability to use English.
