The article Enhanced Handling and Positioning in Early Infancy Advances Development Throughout the First Year, by Michele A. Lobo and James C. Galloway explores the effects of advanced handling and positioning in infants. Twenty-eight families with infants born provided informed consent to be in the experiment. The infants had to be born full term, display typical development, and have no medical diagnoses. They were split into control and experimental groups in order to examine the long-term and short-term effects of enhanced caretaker-infant interaction.
Both the control and experimental groups had seven boys and seven girls at the age of 2 months for the 60-week study. Experimenters had the households go through training and they asked parents to keep a diary of the infants’ behaviors. The infants also were required to be in an awake and alert state throughout the activities. The control group was labeled social experience and contained 15 minutes of daily face-to-face interaction for the first three weeks. The caregivers were advised to have minimum physical interaction and no objects during the 15 minutes but rather use their faces and voices. The experimental group was called handling and positioning and for three weeks, caregivers had to do 15 minutes of daily activities. There were four specific activities which were: prone on the floor with encouragement to push up and lift their head, the caregivers pulling them up and putting them down between sitting and supine as well as supporting their heads in line with their bodies, slowly swaying them in multiple directions while having them bear weight and keeping their bodies upright, and having their hands at midline for play to change from lateral to midline arm position.
The parents were given questioners at the first and final home (5 months) visit that contained questions regarding the infant’s sleeping position.
