Enhancing Airplane Security Essay

1040 words - 5 pages

Airplane security should be enhanced because, the more thorough it is, the safer the passengers and pilots are. The passengers and pilots’ lives rely on their security. They put their lives in the in the hands of those who assure that security. One “slip up” in a security check could lead to hundreds of people losing their life. Men, women, children, moms, and dads are all losing their life due to one small mistake. These mistakes could easily be avoided by enhancing the security. Smuggling people, alcohol, and weapons have become a problem. Finding the securities weaknesses and loopholes could stop these problems.

Drinking and smuggling alcohol on planes has also been a problem. A few years ago, on a Moscow-to-New York flight, passengers became a bit suspicious when a Russian pilot made his preflight announcement. He was said to have garbled his words and couldn’t put a sentence together. Max Kushner, a passenger on Aeroflot Flight 315 on December 28, said, “We all looked at each other and said, ‘Is this guy drunk?’” Arguments began to break out with the passengers and flight attendants till the drunken pilot was exchanged with another. Two weeks before this incident, an Aeroflot-Nord airliner crashed as it tried to land in the Ural Mountains city of Perm. Because of a drunk Russian pilot, all 88 people aboard lost their lives. Russian aviation industry officials claim to have one of the world’s most strict pre-flight screening procedures for pilots. They also are required to undergo a medical check and Breathalyzer test before boarding the plane. However, this is not consistent with the Russian aviation industries of having one of the world’s worst air traffic safety records. The health and safety procedures the pilots go through do not include a blood test to check blood-alcohol levels. The alcohol screening is also at random, so pilots could easily get away with drinking before or during flights.
Smuggling people is illegal and hazardous to the life of the one being smuggled. The FAA says more than 76% of stowaways end in death. Since 1996, there have been 105 stowaways in the wheel well on 94 flights worldwide. In 2012, a 26-year-old man fell to his death from the wheel well of a flight in London. On April 21st 2014, a 15-year-old boy had stowed away in the wheel well of a flight from San Jose, Calif., to Maui. When they found him, they rushed him to the hospital because he had spent 5 ½ hours in the wheel well of a plane. Stowaways must cope with the freezing temperatures of...
