Environmental issues: company’s perspective and government policies
Comparison of the methods for controlling the environmental impact of companies’ activities
The awareness of the importance of environmental conservation has recently taken the centre stage of companies’ corporate and social responsibility decisions. The realization that the companies, especially the manufacturing companies, are playing the greatest part in environmental pollution has resulted to the adoption of policies aimed at reducing these negative environmental impacts. The increased global campaign to reduce the global warming, resulting from the emission of greenhouse gases, has mounted more pressure to the firms to adopt serious environmental protection methods. The methods taken by these companies differ due to the nature of the operations undertaken by an entity. The purpose of this essay is to highlight some of the methods taken by the companies to control the environmental impact resulting from its activities as well as their similarities and the differences.
Development of efficient fuel consumption engines is one of the methods that have been used by the companies to reduce the environmental pollution. The engines have been developed to burn as much fuel as possible in order to minimize the carbon emission. Rajput (2005, p. 612) alludes that internal combustion contributes to most of the atmospheric pollution through emission of carbon. The engines have features like the idling stop-start system which switches off the engine when a machine is idle. Other measures applied in the fuel combustion appliances include: development of direct-injection systems in engines, and the development of automatic transmission in heavy machinery like trucks and transit vehicles among others.
Most companies are adopting recycling as a measure to help minimize the flow of pollutant to the environment. As a result, most companies have developed recycling plants within their premises to recycle the waste in order to re-use it in the production process. Further, some firms have been established with their main business focusing on the recycling of waste from dumpsites to some usable products, a measure which has seen the reduction of the plastics in the environment. To support the efforts of recycling, most manufacturing firms have developed biodegradable packaging materials which have minimal impact on the environment. The worldwide campaign to encourage the use of re-usable bags has come in to augment the policies on plastics.
Energy forms a critical component of the production process. The nature of energy used by companies largely contributes to the measures taken to reduce the environmental impact resulting from the production activities. Most companies have come to realize the importance of using environmentally friendly energy like the electricity, solar power, biogas and wind...
