Focus Question: Why is sleep important for young teenagers?
Sleep is a fundamental need for everyone who needs sleep. Sleep is as important as eating food and drinking fluids. But teens are the ones seen not getting enough sleep. It is proven that teenagers get the minimum hours of sleep than any other age group. Teenagers are seen getting 5 hours of sleep a night. Lack of sleep can affect many thing in a negative way such as abilities to learn,listen, pay attention,drive,mental health, and physical health.

Sleep is proven to improve learning skills and also memory. Lack of sleep can affect a person's learning ability and their memory in a negative ways. Rapid eye movement (also known as REM) while sleeping can cause memory loss due to lack of sleep in the past. Students are seen dozing off in class so lack of sleep gets in the way of their learning.This limits their ability to learn, listen, or pay any attention in class.
Lack of sleep can also affect your ability to even drive. Over 100,000 crashes are caused by drivers that dozed off because they did not getting enough sleep. 1,550 of those crashes have caused peoples death. About half of these crashes are caused by young drivers, ages 15-18. Being sleep deprived while driving is like driving under the influence of alcohol of .08%.
Lack of sleep can also affect mental health. Someones mood can change dramatically even with just one night of terrible sleep. This can happen to anyone who does not get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can be the cause of aggressive behavior towards others. It can cause teenagers to be impatient with friends and family. 46% of teenagers have depression because they are sleep deprived.
