This Paper will analyze the economic benefits of an immigration reform under President Obama administration, that will demonstrates the importance of adopting a new reform that enables immigrant’s to obtain legal status in the U.S. as well as citizenship after a period of 5 years.
In the United States 11 million undocumented people are currently earning less than market value, many employers exploit this individuals and take advantage of their legal condition to pay much less taxes and evade paying them certain benefits as well. What people don’t really see is that by doing this they are contributing less and hurting more the economy of the U.S. That’s the reason why I truly believe that the key success to better the economy in the U.S it’s by adopting a new reform that will allow immigrants to obtain residency and five years later apply for citizenship.
Under President Obama Administration this new reform will grant green cards to 11 million undocumented people that currently live in the U.S. This 11 million people must register and submit, their biometrics, a criminal background check, a national security check, and pay fees and penalties before they are able to obtain a temporary green card. Children whose parents brought them here will be eligible for the same program too. Also Children that were brought here illegally unknowingly that they were doing something wrong will be eligible to earn citizenship by going to college or join the Army, Marines, etc. for a minimum of two years. Once you obtain a temporary status you won’t be able to get assistance from welfare or any other federal benefits; however, people that apply for a green card must pay their taxes, present additional criminal background and national security checks. Also it’s a requirement for them to learn English, and after a period of five since they earn their green card, people will be able to apply for U.S. citizenship like every other permanent resident.
This reform will not only bring a larger labor force but it will also stimulate the economy by: increasing its GDP, increasing the country’s productivity and investment, developing a stronger technology, creating opportunities for tourism, hospitality, and agriculture and finally boosting the housing industries.
According to The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) it’s estimated the new reform that will increase real GDP by 3.3 percent in 2023 and 5.4 percent in 2033 this would mean that real GDP would increase by $700 billion in 2023 and $1.4 trillion in 2033 in today’s dollars. (The Congressional Budget Office ,Pg.12).This increase of GDP would be very beneficiary for the country it will open many more job opportunities for the labor force and would most likely reduce unemployment rate. People who are not legal in this country tend to don’t look for alternatives o jobs due to the limitations they have, but if this limitations don’t exist undocumented would have more opportunities of growth by looking...
