“The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.” This quote written by American mythologist Joseph Campbell is relevant in both “The Epic of Gilgamesh” translated by N. K. Sandars and “The Song of Roland” translated by Frederick Goldin because of the fact that both the main characters have had to step out of their comfort zones and go to a place they fear to reach their personal gain and/or obtain their treasure. Roland and Gilgamesh realize that in order to achieve their goals they must face fears and face what seems the impossible.
The quote “The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek” by Joseph Campbell means that often times doing what you fear the most holds the greatest reward. What we fear is the biggest thing standing in between a person and their treasure. Sometimes taking a leap of faith and going the extra mile is the best thing to do. A person can learn a lot about themselves on the journey about who they are as a person and what’s important in life. This sense of self -discovery is relevant in both “The Epic of Gilgamesh” and “the song of Roland” throughout Gilgamesh’s and Roland’s adventures in the stories.
In the “Epic of Gilgamesh” translated by N. K. Sandars the main character Gilgamesh’s best friend Enkidu dies. Gilgamesh suddenly fears death so he sets out on a journey to find eternal life. He lets the want of power goes to his head and suddenly becomes obsessed with finding a way to immortality. “Because of my brother I am afraid of death, because of my brother I stray through the wilderness and cannot rest” ( Sandars 39). The “cave” Gilgamesh fears to enter is his expedition where he crosses through mountains, travels through dangerous waters and walks through “twelve leagues of darkness” to reach Utanapishtim who Gilgamesh believes will tell him the secret to immortality. When Gilgamesh arrives Utanapishtim tells him the story of the flood and how immortality isn’t an option for Gilgamesh.
