Evaluating the State of Leadership Training in Today's Business OrganizationsAdult education has taken on many forms in recent years. The factors that affect participation, whether formal or informal, are being considered by organizations around the country when creating opportunities for continued learning. There was a rate of return of 639 usable surveys with a margin of error at plus or minus 4 %. Company representatives, who completed the survey, were interviewed prior to completion to ensure each was best suited to take part in the survey. The article stated that of those who completed the survey, 31 % hold senior HR positions, 46 % report directly to a senior HR professional and 33 % operate at the middle-management level or below. (Delahoussaye, August 2001 p. 50)Evaluating how leadership programs are implemented and who participates, the survey results contained data regarding level of participation compared to five years ago, who is selected to participate, whether a program is voluntary or mandatory and demographic diversity among participants within the program. The results indicated that training implementation is generally a combination of voluntary and mandatory participants. The group leading participation is 30-to 39 years of age. Salary employees still make up the bulk of participants, yet companies are reaching beyond managerial roles for potential leaders - one in four participants now being selected from hourly positions. (Delahoussaye, August 2001 p. 50)Participant diversity varies from gender to ethnicity. One area that has not progressed much in the last five years is the % of female participation. The survey found that, currently, only one out of three participants selected to participate in leadership development are female. Of course, this statistic varies from industry to industry. For example, females make up 66 % of participants in the healthcare field compared to only 13 % in agriculture, forestry and fishing areas. Yet, there is equal participation among males and females within the fields of finance, real estate, and education. There does not seem to be any racial bias in regards to participant selection. According to the 2000 Census there is a direct correlation between the 23 % of non-European individuals living in the U.S and the 22 % non-Europeans participating in leadership development. This statistic illustrates a positive shift in culturally diverse leadership development participation. (Delahoussaye, August 2001 p. 50)What is the monetary investment for organizations participating in Leadership Development Training?Within the same survey circulated by Training Magazine and the American Management Association, the cost of developing leaders and how organizations measure program effectiveness was also evaluated. The survey results reflect a substantial monetary investment from organizations. Funds designated from annual training budgets vary between 17 % and 31 %. This variation is mainly based on size of a corporation, as larger corporations have considerably larger budgets.
