Proper evaluation of a leader starts with understanding how leadership and a leader are defined. Rue and Byars (2010) state, “leadership is the ability to influence people to willingly follow one’s guidance or adhere to one’s decisions” (p. 255). Rue and Byars (2010) determine a leader as someone who, “obtains followers and influences them in setting and achieving objectives” (p. 255). These two definitions pointed in the direction of evaluating someone who is influential and trustworthy.

The quality specialist compiles information for quality reporting, conducts issue investigations and provides recommendations for improvement. The quality specialist works closely with the management team if any risk issues occur. The procurement coordinator assists with budget preparation, capital needs and department supply ordering which is essential to meet the financial goals of the laboratory (Rue & Byars, 2010).
The people that she oversees are one of her biggest strengths. She surrounds herself with those who know what to do and will do it without having to be micro-managed. She demonstrates smart trust which is the ability of using wise judgment in determining the amount and level of trust to extend (Covey, 2006). She ensures trust is a two-way street and uses it as the foundation of her team.
Another strength that she has is her passion for mentoring others. She is vested in the employee’s growth and encourages knowledge transfer within her department as well as teaching it within the laboratory system. She knows that continued learning is critical to people succeeding and meeting their goals both personally and professionally. In this, she displays transformational leadership qualities as she transforms the followers along with the situation (Rue & Byars, 2010).
On the other hand, she continues to have the opportunity to not jump to conclusions before she knows the whole story. On occasion this character flaw can decrease the trust between the individuals.
