Evaluation of Programs
When an individual begins a new job, they are provided with a job description of their new position. The job description outlines their duties and responsibilities. It is imperative for the new employee to read and understand the expectations of them as they begin their new job. It is no different for a school counselor. The position comes with an outline of expectations and responsibilities that should be met each school year.

As professional school counselors have access to the job descriptions and performance evaluations/competencies assessments provided on the websites, as well as the job description provided by their district, they should use self-analysis to ensure they are meeting all competencies and standards. If, after self-analysis, there are areas of weakness and need of improvement, the professional school counselor adjusts and changes to show growth and improvement in meeting the standards (ASCA, 2012).
Second, the professional school counselor should perform a self-analysis of the school counseling program’s strengths and areas of improvement. This self-analysis can be completed with the school counseling program assessment found on the ASCA National Model website. Program goals created at the beginning of the school year need to be reviewed at this time to ensure they are being met as the year progresses (ASCA, 2012).
As professional school counselors perform self-analysis on their individual growth and that of the counseling programs, it is also important to meet with administrators for an evaluation of the counselor’s performance. As stated previously, both the ASCA National Model and the Texas Counseling Program Guide provide performance evaluations.
