1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 WHAT IS HIV
HIV is a virus that attacks the T-cell/ CD4 cell within the immune system and uses them to multiply itself. When finally it has attacked many of them it develops into AIDS" a virus that is dependent on humans and therefore, cannot multiply on its own" AVERT. The HIV virus can be broken down into:-
Human – since it’s specifically known for infecting humans only
Immunodeficiency - causes the immune system to lack defence or protection hence making it prone to opportunistic infections on all the T-cells meant for the function of securing it.
Virus - the virus overtakes the T-cell by using them to multiply themselves, hence taking control over the system (What Is HIV/AIDS?, 2012).
1.1.1TRANSMISSION METHODS
• Cuts from Sharp objects e.g. Sharing of unclean needles between drug users , accidents
• Mother to child transmission
• Transfusion of infected blood.
• Unprotected sex
1.2. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HIV/AIDS
There are different stages of HIV which display a variety of symptoms:
1.2.1Early Stage of HIV: Symptoms
Symptoms begin as early as 2-4 weeks after infection this entirely depends on individuals since people tend to react differently. At this stage the most common symptom is flu-like often described as the worst flu ever and is known as "acute retroviral syndrome"(ARS) or "primary HIV infection". It comes along with: - fever (the most common symptom), swollen glands, sore throat, rash, fatigue, muscle and joint aches and pains, headache.
There is no definite period for which these symptoms last however; it could range from days to weeks. These symptoms do not have to occur in every HIV case and therefore one cannot rely on symptoms to tell whether or not they are infected. Tests have got to be carried out. In the initial stages, of HIV the body does not produce the antibodies that aid in detecting the infection therefore, making it difficult to detect it through the traditional HIV tests which rely on antibodies in order to get accurate results. However, a new HIV test was approved in 2013 that can detect the presence of HIV in an individual. This is also a highly sensitive and infectious stage as high levels of HIV in the blood stream are detected
