What the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Accomplished?
In order to understand the meaning of the death and resurrection of Jesus it is imperative to comprehend the meaning of the Old Testament and the covenants that God made to Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David. When God created the world and humans it was for God to inhabit the world with humans. However, Adam and Eve the first humans that God created, sin against Him by eating from the tree that God had forbidden. From that moment on, the world fell into sin. God tries to renew the relationship that was intended for humans to have with Him. Yet, as God continue to reaching out to His people, they remained in their sinful ways. Therefore, God makes several covenants to attempting to reestablish the relationship that was broken by His people. In this process of renewal, God wanted to include all mankind to partake in this new and last covenant.
Gods Covenant with Israel
After Adam and Eve sinned by eating the forbidden fruit, sin was in mans’ heart. Consequently, God wanted to destroy human kind but he found favor on Noah. God sent the death angel. God made an agreement with his people that whoever killed a perfect lamb and use its blood to mark the doorpost the angel of death shall not take their firstborn. They also had to consume part of the lamb. This was called the Passover.
The people that did not follow this agreement suffered the consequences of death to the first born. With the help of God, Moses delivered Israel from Egypt. They continue to follow the Passover meal as remembrance of the agreement they had with God. Another definition to covenant is “contracting parties symbolized their bond by a common meal at the conclusion of the formal agreement”(Myers, 1975). Once they were out of Egypt, Israel started to complain to Moses. God calls Moses to a mountain and makes...
