Evolution Should Be Taught In School

3249 words - 13 pages

Evolution occurs biologically and organically and it refers to the change of organisms, rather natural or with external modification, over many generations of time (Young 3). Although not completely proven, evolution is widely accepted by the scientific community, who has expressively proven this information with the inability for skeptics to disprove the theory of evolution (Scott 11; Young 3). Those with religious views of creationism believe that God created humans rather than in the evolution of human beings; this is an antiscientific point of view (Cracraft para 3). For many years now, people with an antiscientific point of view have tried to remove evolution from the curriculum, change the meaning of evolution, or even prevent it from entering the curriculum, since many schools do not already teach evolution (Scott 12). Despite the resistance, schools should teach students about evolution so that they can grasp not only a widely proven scientific fact, but also the basic knowledge guaranteed in a science class (Cracraft para 4)
To begin, one must understand the differences between Creationism and evolution, and why there is ample controversy between the two. Creationists believe that only God could create organisms this complex and that evolution does not explain many factors as to why humans act the way that they do. They believe that humans were created in his image in their present form and did not evolve from animals (Bellah 21; Carlson para 4). They also believe that natural selection, “survival of the fittest”, could not have changed organisms so drastically (Lane para 1; Scott 12). Evolutionists believe in Charles Darwin’s theory that organisms change over time to better adapt to their surroundings (Lane para 1; Scott 9). It is true that many try to believe that evolution was included in Genesis; however, the argument is frequently unsound because the theory of evolution disregards a considerable amount of the information incorporated in the bible, making the argument inconsistent if one reads the Bible literally (Young 3). This is why the topic is so controversial; if teachers teach evolution, many believe they could possibly be targeting and contradicting student’s religious beliefs (Bella 44; Young 9).
Although society regards evolution only as a theory, scientists accept it as one of the utmost substantial and just theories in all of scientific history (Young 3). One cannot argue that schools should not be teaching evolution simply because scientists have not proven it yet. Should teachers avoid teaching gravity as well because it is technically only a theory? No matter what one’s belief is, they should accept what new information science has to offer. For example, scientists are almost certain that Homo sapiens evolved from chimps due to the astounding 98.4% genetic similarity between the two (Scott 9). Even though there is not a 100% guarantee it is obviously extremely likely that humans did, in fact, evolve from chimps due...
