Same Rights To Same Sex Couples

1340 words - 5 pages

People all over the world come to the United States in search of freedom and equality. Being able to marry anyone, no matter the gender, is a freedom of right, but if that freedom of right is taken away from people than there is no equality. Homosexual people in the United States are people that deserve freedom and equality and taking away their right to marriage is taking away their equality with the rest of Americans. Even though certain religions are against same sex marriage, same sex marriage guarantees equality and freedom. Gay marriage would make it easier for same-sex couples to adopt, providing stable homes for children who would otherwise be left in foster care.
Making gay marriage legal in America will be the only way one could believe America is really the land of free. Many Americans don't have the right to get married because of who they fall in love with, and even if they can get married, all the rights and benefits that come with a marriage are taken away from them. According to “Gay Marriage Activists Rally: Recent String of Victories Spurs Big Push” by Marisol Bello, “The Supreme Court ruling invalidated a section of the 17-year-old Defense of Marriage Act that denied federal benefits, such as Social Security survivors benefits and joint tax filing, to married gay men and lesbians in states that allow gay marriage.” (Bello,1). These rights should not be taken away, just because someone decides to marry who they truly love. They should not be treated with less respect because society does not accept their marriage.”Nobody when they are kids dreams about walking down the aisle and getting civil unionized,” Councilor says. “Why can’t we be in the same category? It’s separate and not equal.” (Bello,3). Many kids, at a young age, know who they love; those kids deal with many hardships growing up. Why should they be denied happiness on their marriage day? They should be able to marry whoever they love no matter what gender they are.“They say they would not consider a civil union or domestic partnership because it relegates them to second-class status. Unlike marriage, a civil union or domestic partnership grants couples different rights in different states.” an older couple said according to Bello. Therefore neither the right to get married or the rights of a married couple should be taken away from same sex couples, just like they aren't taken away from a straight couple. The only difference between the two are the sexual acts these couples pursue, but nothing else.
Gay marriage is contradictory with the beliefs, sacred texts, and traditions of many religious groups. Many people who oppose gay marriage believe so because of their religious beliefs. The bible says many things that should not be done but many people stopped following them. For example, most people do work on the seventh day, so why should gay and lesbian couples should not be able to marry? Just because the bible or any sacred text says one thing, it doesn’t mean...
