There are many types of crimes in the United States. Some of those crimes are larceny, robbery, assault, murder, and even domestic violence. Domestic violence is not what we thought would be carrying as a societal problem into the new millennium. In fact, it is an ancient problem that mere mention of today as an ongoing crises should really make our society embarrassed and oppressive. Many years ago domestic violence was considered acceptable. Now it is a huge problem. All along we have been viewing domestic violence as merely a moral and ethical dilemma, not an obligation. We have convinced ourselves that it was a "private family matter" and not a criminal act. Strict laws do exist to punish spousal abusers, the violence continues because of the weakness of females and the need for public education on the topic. The laws are neither practical not are they used properly.Domestic violence is now one of the leading causes of death among women, not heart disease, breast cancer, nor accidental injury but the beating, scarring, terrorizing, and often murder. Domestic abuse includes but is not limited to physical or sexual abuse and any offense against the person as defined in the Criminal Code of Louisiana, except negligent injury and defamation, committed by one family or household member against another. Domestic abuse also includes abuse from adults as defined in R.S. 14:403.2 when committed by an adult child or adult grandchild (Louisiana Domestic 1). Domestic violence is a pervasive problem in virtually all countries, cultures, classes, and income groups. It is a complex and multifaceted problem with individual solutions that are appropriate for different women in different socio-economic contexts. With that being said, how many women have to e abused and battered year after year until something is done about it? What are the police doing about domestic violence? What is their response to the crime?Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) provide innovative programs that respond directly to the emerging needs of state and local law enforcement. COPS have a problem solving partnership. This helps to promote collaboration between police and their communities to solve local problems. Community policing could be called the new orthodoxy of law enforcement in the United States. It has become an increasingly popular alternative to what many police administrators perceive as the failure of traditional policing to deal with street crime especially crimes of violence! This partnership with the community has goals such as reducing crime, helping to reduce the fear of crime, and enhancing the quality of life in the community.
