What It Means To Be Brave

580 words - 2 pages

The word bravery can often be interchanges with the words of courage, or daring, but what defines courage? The Merriam-Webster Online dictionary states: "mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty". Another words, bravery means the defense of many things at own personal loss, or risk. The defense of one's or others' country, the defense of beliefs/or principles, and the defense of the weak. When the word courage is said, the image that is often seen is one that is at war. This is very true; it is very heroic to defend one's country and the freedom of the country. Even more gallant is defending someone else's country, such as Canada did in World War 1, when Canada send hundreds of thousands of volunteer soldiers to the trenches in France and Russia, to help fend off the German attacks. These Canadian soldiers showed great bravery, because these volunteer soldiers fought with enemies that were not in direct threat of their own country. Many Canadian soldiers died, or were injured due to the war, this shows courage, because they defended someone else's country at their own personal peril. One may not think of this as courage, but it is. Defending, and dieing for ones beliefs and ideologies is very courageous. This can be for, either, religious or moral beliefs.
