In the play Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare, love is a very important and a consistent theme; which the play is based on. The theme if love is important because, from a very young age people feel love. We want to know what love is. Where does it come from? How do I get it? What does it feel like? When will I have it? What do I need to have love? Love is something we wait for. We imagine our first kiss. Our first “I love you.” Our first heartbreak. The truth is love is made up of many things: Pain, Joy, Compassion, understanding, longing, and tears. Shakespeare uses the notion of love to show how important trust and loyalty are in any relationship.
Trust is important to love because trust is the foundation of love. Trust is earned by demonstrating loyalty over time. Having trust makes you feel secure in a relationship. It gives us the opportunity to share our emotions, feelings, memories, and oneself. . The presented model depicts how hurt Claudio is when he finds out that Hero isn’t trust worthy. The hurt and longing for hero is shown in the tears of Claudio’s eyes while the anger is shown by the act of Claudio turning his back to her. Hero passing out shows her sadness and confusion from all of the commotion. The out reached arm conveys that she is still longing to be with Claudio despite the fact that he doesn’t trust her. When hero passes it shows that having trust involves a level of vulnerability, which Claudio also shows is the play.
“If half thy outward graces had been placed upon thy thoughts and counsels of thy heart! But fair the well, most foul, most fair. Farewell, the pure and impiety and impious purity. For the I’ll lock up all the gates of love and on my eyelids shall conjecture heading to turn all beauty and the thoughts of harm and never show it more be gracious.” (4.1. 105-113)
Claudio is showing how he put his trust into hero and the fact of how innocent and beautiful she was when in reality she was none of those things. Instead Hero was a liar and an adulterer in his eyes. Claudio feels cheated and helpless inside for letting his heart get in the way of his reality. While Claudio is losing his trust in hero it is evident that Hero is losing her honor. Claudio claims that he will never feel love again because all the joy of love is not worth the sadness of pain. Claudio begins to turn into the first version of Benedick that we come to see at the beginning of the play. In reality it was the pain of love that truly changed Claudio. Although Hero and Claudio’s relationship is central to the plot it is obviously the least interesting. Instead the audience is captivated by the relationship between Beatrice and Benedick.
Loyalty is important to love because it’s about depending on one another to come through. Loyalty is about giving your time to help someone with their needs and being selfless. The lack of loyalty is very detrimental to relationships around us. Loyalty is something that Benedick lacks...
