Introduction
Paul is writing to the church in Colossae in Colossians 1:9-14. This passage starts with the fact that he is aware of them and leads into a prayer that he has been praying for them. He wants them to walk in the knowledge of God’s will for them and for them to use spiritual wisdom and understanding as they walk out God’s will. He encourages them to stand fast in their faith, while working for the kingdom and being fruitful in their efforts. Paul also reminds them that they have already been qualified by Jesus to share in His inheritance with other believers. Paul says for them to “walk in a manner worthy of the Lord to please Him in all respects….” (Colossians 1:10).[footnoteRef:1] This paper identifies to whom Paul was specifically speaking in this passage, why that knowledge is significant and how it applies to the believer’s life today. [1: Unless otherwise indicated, all Scripture references are from the New American Standard Bible (NASB).]

Context
Colossians 1:9-14 is a powerful passage in the Scriptures for believers and the church of today. It is important as we begin to study these verses that we understand what the context of this passage is saying, who wrote it, to whom it was written and why. What was going on with the church at that time? Does it apply to us today? Kaiser explains that “contextual interpretation is one of the most basic principles to keep in mind when we seek to understand what people say and write.”[footnoteRef:2] When we can understand what was going on it can help us understand and better apply it to the church and our lives today. God is a God of purpose and as such never does anything by accident. This passage of scripture was put there by design for us to understand. Thornton calls it the “fruit of the Gospel”[footnoteRef:3] and goes on to quote John Calvin by saying “the Word and the Spirit always go together: the gospel is the only message that is accompanied by the power of the Holy Spirit to convert the sinful individual and make him or her capable of pleasing God.”[footnoteRef:4] [2: Walter C.
