Extra Credit 3 Essay

A two-party system is a political system in which only two parties have a realistic opportunity to compete effectively for control. As a result, all, or nearly all, elected officials end up being a member in one of the two major parties. In a two-party system, one of the parties usually holds a majority in the legislature hence, being referred to as the majority party while the other party is the minority party. The United States of America is considered to be a two-party system. A two-party system emerged early in the history of the new Republic. Beginning with the Federalists and the Jeffersonian Republicans in the late 1780s, two major parties have dominated national politics, although which particular two parties has changed with the times and issues. During the nineteenth century, the Democrats and Republicans emerged as the two dominant parties in American politics. As the American party system ...view middle of the document...

Mainstream Republicans and the Tea Party have fallen out almost entirely over political tactics. After the loss of the budget standoff and the political damage reports began to compile, Republicans began to point fingers at each other. “Let’s face it: it was not a good maneuver ... And that’s when you’ve got to have the adults running the thing.” Senator Orrin Hatch stated. While several miles away in Mississippi, Republican state senator Chris McDaniel announced his bid to take the seat held by one of those “adults” — Senator Thad Cochran. In addition to leading a government shutdown and sparking retaliations for who was to be blamed for the standoff, the budget fight also indicated an escalation of a battle for control of the Republican Party. This confrontation between the Tea Party and establishment Republicans will unravel in the coming Congressional and presidential primaries. The Tea Party is not backing down, they are now enhancing their effort to eliminate some of the Republicans who they said doomed their effort from the start. The establishment Republicans are going to try to prevent another round of embarrassing defeats. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce will determine which candidates to support in the upcoming midterm elections based upon whether they voted end the shutdown and raise the debt ceiling.
If the partisan divide in Congress continues, the Republicans will rapidly fall out of political entity. The battle over the shutdown has highlighted the gap within the party, which indicates no stability in the party. Many citizens believe that the G.O.P. does not care about them, which is doing great harm to the Party and its candidates on the federal level. As long as the Republicans continue to say insensitive things about women’s rights and try to cut social services for the poor, oppose gay marriage, and show irrational hatred toward immigration policies they will continue to lose votes from the minority group which comprises the majority of the electorate. The party has lost two presidential elections and a Supreme Court case, as well as two Senate elections. They are well on their way to becoming the 21st Century incarnation of the Whigs.
