Face To Face Vs. Electronic Communication

2006 words - 8 pages

Why was the message that was sent to me in all caps? Is that a way of showing anger? Many individuals receive emails, text messages, and other forms of messages through electronic communication and have no idea what the message is saying, or how to decide ones tone of voice. Many parents have kids who just started using communication or haven’t started at all, and are wondering what to teach their kids about communication. The best solution to this problem is to teach face-to-face communication as it was done before modern technology. People would walk or drive somewhere and meet up just to have a conversation. Today, we rely on electronics to communicate. Even though sending emails is easy, talking face-to-face helps understand people in a more formal manner. Are these digital connections as meaningful as the old - fashioned face-to-face kind?
Many people would choose electronics over face-to-face communication. “The internet has ushered in an era in which people are able to communicate with more people, faster and in more ways than before” (“online and offline” 1). Teens that interact with one another on social networking websites such as Tumblr, or MySpace is an unbelievable seventy – three percent (Ferriter 1). Over five hundred billion minutes are used per month on Facebook alone, and that is not just teens but users of all ages (Ferriter 2). “On twitter there are fifty million messages that are posted each day” (Ferriter 2). Not seeing loved ones that are far away and too hard to drive to see. Connecting online can help different people in different ways. While on a blogging website, one can create new friends and give others advice to get through rough patches. “For Kara Jones, 39, of Vachon Island, Washington, a critical personal lesson - that she could survive the still birth of her son after a normal pregnancy – came from an online stranger – turned – friend. ‘Friends and family tried to help, but our relationships had changed in the face of grief,’ she says. ‘Most did not know how to deal with the situation’” (Stich 2). In addition, computers help those who are from low income households in that when they are given to mention, “YouTube has twenty - four hours of new video uploaded every minute and receives two billion daily page views” (Ferriter 2). The statistics show a lot of people use electronic communication, but why?
What are the goods of using electronics? Many agree that social media allows talking to or internet access; it helps them become better readers (Bower 4). Also, Facebook makes shyness disappear. “Facebook is for shy people as water is for the thirsty” (Rosenwald 1). Sometimes the internet improves lives in building relationships, and can be used as a bridge. “Facebook is a crutch, feeling more comfortable with digital friends than personal ones” (Rosenwald 2). Some more benefits of using electronic communication, include being able to get reminders from coaches such as times of a practice or dates of...
