Fashion designers create clothes and are granted opportunities to attend fashion shows and travel the world ("What They Do"). To onlookers, being a fashion designer seems to be all about glitz and glamour, but in reality, there is more to it than what they perceive ("What They Do"). Because they craft original garments, accessories, and footwear, being a designer is a challenging and tedious job ("What They Do"). They sketch designs, select fabrics and patterns, and manage the production process ("What They Do"). Designers are also involved in every part of the production process. The majority of fashion designers possess a bachelor’s degree in fashion design or fashion merchandising ("How to Become One"). While it is not necessarily required, an aspiring designer with a background in marketing and other business skills will be favored over a talented person with no knowledge of business procedures ("Fashion Designers" Encyclopedia). A bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising, business, or marketing from Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana will provide a designer with sufficient education needed to not only become a successful designer but also give them the skills to be able to run their own business or retail store ("Department of Management and Business Administration"). The programs are four years long, requiring a total of 120 hours ("Department of Management and Business Administration"). Basic coursework range from drawing, computer aid design, apparel design, history of costume, textiles, apparel construction to clothing and human behavior, fashion promotion, retail buying, visual display, entrepreneurship, international business, merchandise math, contemporary business strategies and applied trend forecasting ("Department of Management and Business Administration"). The expected annual cost of attending Southeastern Louisiana University is $5,751 for tuition and fees, $7,190 for room and board, and $1,200 for books and supplies ("Tuition and Fee Information"). In addition, someone who is aspiring to be a fashion designer is encouraged to start creating ideas and designs and keeping track of them in a portfolio to showcase their style and ability ("Fashion Designers “Fashion Designers)

Fashion students should utilize classes such as drawing to make sure figures are well drawn and neatly presented in the portfolio, apparel design to show detailed development of a concept into a collection or piece of clothing, in addition to computer aid design to create a concise flat drawing technique with correct proportion that displays the appropriate details for manufacture, and history of costume, which displays knowledge of other areas of society and culture. Not only are designers encouraged to build portfolios but to also get involved in internships ("How to Become One").
