$100 billion is the amount of money that Americans spend on fast food each year (Ichikawa). Americans spend less money on higher education, new cars, or computers when compared to fast food (Ichikawa). Fast food can be really harmful to a person’s health mainly because of its high calories content which can create obesity if it is consistently consumed (Food and Nutrition). It would take someone six hours to walk off a Big Mac and a large order of fries, so it must contain a lot of calories (Ichikawa). Fast food is number one cause of obesity, as a result of the high amount of calories and sodium.
Fast food is a problem because teens treat it like a regular meal (Ichikawa). Fast food is a common meal for teens and children, which is evident in a research which found that, “about one- third of U.S. teens and children eat some type of fast food every day (Burger Battles). According to the article Burger Battles, “Doctors, scientists, nutritionists, and health experts… say most food has too many calories, too much sodium, and too much saturated fat for kid to eat more than just once in a while.” The high levels of calories in food may cause obesity since excess calories are converted to fat (Food and Nutrition). An example of a fast food with high calorie is the Whopper meal at Burger King which has the same amount of calories as a dozen bananas (Ichikawa). So fast food can create obesity with its high amount of calories.
Most people have equal access to the supermarkets and to fast food (Neegard, Lauran and Agiesta, Jennifer). What would make people choose fast food over normal food? It may be because fast food restaurants “offer very tasty, low cost food” (Burger Battles). A reason for kids for kids to want to eat fast food may be because “fast food places lure in the kids with toys and movie tie-ins” (Will Fast Food). According to Burger Battles, “… it is the advertising that has to do with fast food’s booming popularity with kids.” Kids ages 12 to 17 sees nearly five fast food advertisement every day (Burger Battles). So fast food advertising has a lot to do with making people eat fast food.
