To meet fast-food chains’ expectations, one company decided to focus its activity on the development of components and materials in order to help the farmers all around the world to be successful, to produce healthier food for the human race and for the animals while reducing agriculture’s impact on environment (The World according to Monsanto). This company is the decoy of the modern society: Monsanto. It was born in 1901 at Saint-Louis and was a little producer of saccharin and created the first industrial scandal when one of its factories exploded in Texas City in 1947, killing 500 people (Seelow, Soren-Parr 3). A dark reality is hidden behind this worldwide company with an extremely ...view middle of the document...
In 1975, Monsanto realized some tests on rats with PBC: they showed that it was provoking huge tumors. At the end of those confidential reports, it is mentioned “We can’t afford to lose one dollar in business” (Pars 8-9). Finally, Monsanto is sentenced to pay 700 million dollars of damages and is responsible for the cleaning of the city. None of the executive members or CEO has been put in jail (Parr 10). But the damage is done: Anniston’s inhabitants have in average a PCB level of 64 when the normal level is 2. They all have cancers, pregnant women gave birth to low IQ babies, and the sexual hormones are completely upset (The World According to Monsanto). Furthermore, according to the article “What Are the Human Health Effects of PCBs?” , The International Agency for Research on Cancer and the Environmental Protection Agency categorizes PCBs as potential “occupational carcinogen” (Parr 2). Studies of PCBs’ effects on human have proved that it gives liver cancer, melanomas, gall bladder cancer, biliary, gastrointestinal cancer and brain cancer (Parr 3). People who breathe or touch high PCBs levels suffer from nose and lungs irritations, skin irritation and rashes. For children, the growth is retarded, puberty is delayed, and girls suffer from genital malformations. For teenagers, it upsets thyroid hormones and decreases the amount of lymphocytes and T cells in the body (Pars 4-9). When not directly infected by PCBs by living in an infected city, people are exposed to PCBs by eating fish from the Hudson River (Parr 11). But Monsanto did not only create this inhuman substance, another product is at the origin of its success.
