Field Experience Reflection Essay

I was given the chance to observe and interact with Mary over the course of the semester. Each time I was in the English Language Learner classroom, I learned something new. As the weeks went on, the lessons would become more challenging than the previous ones. I was able to see Mary improve her English skills each time I was in the ELL room. The first two times I was there, we corrected some of her mistakes on a multiple worksheets. We worked on mostly English worksheets, but one math worksheet as well. I was able to observe Mary interacting in her physical education class. Mary also read out loud to me several different passages that the teacher gave her. Mary works hard at her school work and is motivated to learn, even when it is difficult.
Another area where I saw Mary grow, was cognitive development. We covered cognitive development in class and each time I went to the ELL room I saw Mary improve these skills. Mary came to the United States during the fall of 2013 without knowing any English, except a few basic words. As I worked with her on her reading and writing skills, I saw her improve throughout the lessons. She became more familiar and comfortable with the language as the semester went on. I was able to see her quiz scores go up, even though she was reading more challenging books. Not only did her assignments and tests scores improve, so did our conversations. The first time I was at the school, I had to re-word some of my questions and ask her to repeat a few of her answers. However the last time I was with Mary, we were able to have fluid conversations without too much confusion on either end. I know that Mary will continue to develop cognitively as she continues her education.
The last concept of adolescent development that was both taught in class and I observed, was social development. Mary is a quiet person who likes to keep to herself. Since she is focused on her academics, she pays attention in class and does not talk to her peers. Even in the halls or before class starts, she does not interact with the other students. I only saw Mary talk to another student once while I was observing her. When she was in physical education class, she talked with another girl while they were doing warm up laps around the gym. However, Mary talked to me and her teachers more often than her own peers. When I talked with Mary she was open about her family, school, or any other topic.
