Final Essay

1038 words - 5 pages

There are many movies and books that share the same ideas and themes.

Each movie or book has it own individuality but yet some movies and books can be

similar in some ways. The book, Invierno By Junot Diaz and the movie, named “The

Namesake” are very similar in some ways. They both demonstrate the same ideas

and the same themes. In the movie “The Namesake”, the son wants to fit in but his

parents don’t want to let go of their roots and their traditions just like the book

Invierno by Junot Diaz. Invierno by Junot Diaz and the movie “The Namesake”

illustrate how immigrants struggle to let go of their roots and traditions to open up

to a new life style in exchange the for the American dream.

The American dream basically means to have a strong untied family and to

be married and to also own property and have the perfect job. Many people have

tried to accomplish this dream and many have succeeded in it. In both, the movie

and the book, the characters try to accomplish this dream but there are many

obstacles in the way. In the book, Invierno By Junot Diaz, the father has trouble

adapting to the idea of the American dream. In Invierno, the book quotes,” “Rafa

showed me how, and I said, Fine, and had no problems in front of him, but when Papi

was breathing down my neck, his hand on a belt, I couldn't perform; I looked at my father

like my laces were live wires he wanted me to touch together." In order to accomplish the

American dream, we must also obey the laws and rules that the United States of America

has in their system. In the United States of America, children are given many rights and

the government stresses a set of laws forbidding from parents to abuse their children.

This is against the law and if abuse is found on the kids, the kids usually get taken away

from the parents. The father fails to obey this law. It is hard for him to follow this law

because he was raised and taught that abusing or hitting your kids is not against the law.

This quotes demonstrates how it is a struggle to truly adapt to the American Dream life

style. It also shows one of the obstacles that get in the way from accomplishing the

American Dream.

In the movie, “The Namesake”, there are also obstacles that get in the way

from accomplishing the American Dream just like the book Invierno by Junot Diaz.

In the movie, Gogol parents tell the kindergarten principal who is Mrs. Lapidus that

they want Gogol to be called by his worthy name which is Nikhil while he is in

school. In the movie, the principal quotes "And what about you, Gogol? Do you want

to be called by another name?"

wants to be called Gogol while he is in school. The principal listens

to Gogol instead of his parents. This shows how Gogol’s parents refuse

to let go of his original name...
