Final For 2014 Essay

1536 words - 7 pages

The themes in both The Importance of Being Earnest, written by Oscar Wilde, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson, are how people change themselves to please others. Both of the main characters face an up hill battle with people pleasing and they feel they must change to fit into society.
In The Importance of Being Earnest John Worthing, also known as Earnest or Jack, and Algernon, Algy for short, both create false identities to hide things they do in different parts of the country. John goes by John or Jack where he lives in the country town of Hertfordshire but in London he goes by Earnest. Each man is changing who he really is so he can please someone else rather than being the person he has always been. In the end each man got to repent and tell the women how much she meant the men the women both loved the men for who they really were.
In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. Henry Jekyll creates a beastly character of Edward Hyde. Dr. Jekyll is too afraid to face his problems face to face so he creates Hyde. Jekyll is a very well liked man in the community and does not want to do something to tarnish his name. The beast of Hyde is created so Jekyll can change who he is and carry out acts which are against what he usually acts like. In the stories it is stated Jekyll is a well liked man and if you are friends with him it brings you up in society. When Jekyll turns into Hyde he is able to do all the devious crimes he is unable to do as himself. Since Jekyll created Hyde and used him to carry out these act in a way to not taint his self image and continue to please other people by how well known he was.
Changing who are to be accepted can be taken many different ways and can be done in many different ways. Some people may act differently around different groups of people, others might have a hidden life so they can be accepted in the community but do things which would not be accepted, and another way could be changing your name and personality in different settings to be accepted in all the settings they put themselves in. People change who they are a lot in search of ways to fit in. Because, in today’s society social acceptance is necessary part in succeeding. Changing completely who you are for a women or a social standing is a problem but compromising is not too big of an issue, if anything it is a necessary part. The men in both stories throughout most of each continue to chance who they are to hide there lies. In the end of both stories the men compromise and find common ground. Jack and Algy end up confessing to the women they love how much means to them and how they are sorry for acting as if they were someone else. The women forgive then men and everything works out for good. Yet everything does not work for good with the battle of Jekyll and Hyde, Hyde ends up gaining too much power which Jekyll could not control he in turn has to kill himself and Hyde to save others.
Both of these stories and the way people change for others and social status could bring up the question about good and evil. It is clear in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Jekyll is a good man and tends to do no evil deeds yet Hyde is evil and tends to do anything and everything he wants. Jekyll throughout the story must battle Hyde and the deeds he has done to many people. Finally he ends the battle by killing both of them. The battle of good and evil is not as clear in The Importance of Being Earnest, Jack and Algy face the battle on a more personal level. Each man must face his...
