Healthy eating is an important part of a healthy lifestyle and is something which should be taught at a young age. During their growing years, adolescents experience an increase of appetite, and more than 60% of Australian teens are not eating the correct number of serves from each food group. Poor nutrition at any age can lead to obesity, tooth decay, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, stroke and some cancers. To prevent these health complications, eating a variety of nutritious foods and exercising daily is the best way to maintain a healthy lifestyle which lowers risks. My client is a 15 year old elite swimmer and will be competing in 5 events in 4 weeks’ time at the National Championships. Therefore, for her to be in top shape, she must follow the Australian Dietary guidelines, with some flexibility due to her excessively high energy requirements.
 
Guideline 1 is about achieving a healthy weight, being physically active every day and choosing amounts of nutritious foods and drinks to meet your daily energy needs. High performance athletes require more daily kilojoules than an average 15 year old. The comparison between both lifestyles is that athletes use around 2000KJ-4000KJ more (Nutrition Australia). My client requires 12,292KJ on a daily basis. Before or after a training session, she must consume a high protein, high carbohydrate snack. This will assist with faster muscle recovery and optimizes their growth and development. Every morning, my client should eat a high energy meal to prepare themselves for the day ahead. For example, if my client has a heavy training load in the morning, a nutritious meal filled with carbohydrates, vitamins, protein and iron will definitely help them meet their daily energy needs. My client's weight is dependent on the amount of physical activity she does and the amount of food she eats. Therefore, her training timetable and weekly eating plan must be balanced and reviewed to ensure that she is consuming the correct amount of food.
Guideline 2 states to enjoy a variety of nutritious foods from the five food groups every day. For my client to compete in top shape at the National championships in 4 weeks' time, the amount of serves she requires is vitally important. Thus, her diet must include the following: 5 for vegetables and legumes/beans, 2 for fruit, 7 for grains, 2.5 for lean meat and poultry, 3.5 for dairy and 0-2.5 for discretionary choices (Eatsforhealth.gov.au). Vegetables have no cholesterol and are important sources of many nutrients, such as potassium. Diets rich in potassium may help sustain healthy blood pressure. The benefits of fruits is that they are naturally low in fat, sodium and calories. One of the major essential nutrients from fruit is vitamin C, which helps repair body tissues, heals cuts and wounds, and keeps teeth and gums healthy.
