First Assignment

1054 words - 5 pages

We put people in prison for many different reasons, in most cases these reasons revolve around removing this person from society not only for “the safety of others”, but also for “the safety against themselves”. People by definition, extends to all; including juveniles. In fact in some cases, a juvenile can commit a crime as horrific as an adult. In order to demonstrate the principle that some juveniles deserve life sentences; we will look at the case of T.J. Lane. T.J. Lane had a small bit of a criminal past, and a criminal father role model to look up. Other than the occasional “…[losing] touch with reality and suffer[ing] from hallucinations, psychosis and fantasies”(Sheeran), T.J. Lane ...view middle of the document...

With juveniles there is always the question of; can they learn from this mistake? Or will they ever be able to be put back into society? To answer this, you must look at the two prior mentioned requirements. To be an immature behavior crime it is usually spur-of-the-moment, such as killing someone who “pisses you off”. And be committed with others such as a gang killing where everyone is stabbing the victim. If a crime is committed alone, and is completed planned out with painful weaponry that changes the immature crime to a mature adult-like crime. This type of crime is different than the immature because there was plenty time for the crime process to end and the crime would not have been committed. The second requirement is a lack of remorse for the crime. If it was an immature crime, regrets of immaturity would appear. Without remorse there is no way that society would be safe with this criminal amongst them. So it is my belief that if any juvenile hits these two requirements; that one, they should have a life sentence and that two there should be no chance of parole. Now this opinion could be considered harsh, but it leads to the question, who is the one who really deserves the punishment? Is it the criminal or society? If you release this juvenile into society, wouldn’t they just hurt the people of society more. That would be punishing society. However, if you put the juvenile in prison for the crime they committed in a life sentence the only one punished is the juvenile. The only person they can hurt there is themselves or other criminals. And what is the process of justice, but to punish the person who committed the crime.
T.J. Lane committed the crime alone and was horrific as he killed his peers so he has the first requirement of committing the horrific crime alone. We can see that T.J. Lane hit the second...
