For the history of many cultures, flowers and floral design have been incorporated through various different things. People have then since realized the ability to speak through flowers; this is known as “The Language of Flowers”. By speaking through flowers they are able to send flowers with meaning. “There is a language, little known, Lovers claim it as their own. It symbols smiles upon the land, Wrought by nature’s wondrous hand; And in their silent beauty speak, of life and joy, to those who seek. For Love Divine and sunny hours, in the language of the flowers,” said the writer of The Language of Flowers, London, 1875. Floral design is abundant everywhere and is important to many cultures based on a flowers meaning, designs used in certain events, and also the history and psychology behind it all. Research has shown that flowers have a psychological connection to a person’s feelings. Later to be discussed in this paper. Many nations have their own styles of floral arranging, this is dependent upon what varieties of flowers they have available as well as the culture of the nation. The art of floral design is one that is constantly changing. It is strongly influenced by movements in art or trends in interior design, often building upon styles that have been used in the past (DelPrince). Many designs used in North America have roots to European styles, which, in turn, evolved partly from the practices of Ikebana.
