1027 words - 5 pages

In this essay I’m going to talk about a person. That is learning English as her second language and I’m going to explain the way of improving her English with some activities I came up with doing a research, applying questionnaire and helping her with her homework. So she could feel comfortable about her English.
First of all in order to complete this essay. I talked with Nayeli Lopez and asked her about what she struggles the most in her English. She is a 17 year old Mexican student. And I think the best way is by using what she prefers the most and what she’s interested in.
A good way to improve her vocabulary is having her read articles, books, magazines, etc. That she likes. Her favorite type of reading or things to read are romantic, classic and action books. Once she starts reading her materials, during her reading she should write down or circle words that she’s not familiar with.
Once she has her “new words” written down, it’s good to go over them and tell her what the definition is, and have her write it down also in every reading or any time she finds new words, tell her to write them down and to always ask for the definition. So she could start building her personal dictionary. When explaining her what the words mean, it’s good to explain it in English the easiest way as possible. Using explanation methods such as stick-figures, realia or mimicry if possible and it’s always good to concept check to verify that she actually understands the meaning. As always avoid metalanguage and have her repeat the pronunciation of the word. So she could have a clear idea of the definition and it’s pronunciation.
Secondly, another difficulty in her English is, her conversation skills. She gets very shy when speaking with others, because she is not sure if she is speaking the right way. So I was trying to figure out a way to try to improve her English skills, and I found out that the best way of improving her English conversation skills. By making her talk and feel comfortable about her English. In the beginning it might be hard for her. But the more practice she gets, the faster she gets comfortable with her English.
But here the question is “How is it going to be easier for her to speak without feeling uncomfortable?”. There are many ways and...
