Follow Your Dreams, Lead Yourself To Success

755 words - 3 pages

As a business student, you must understand two important concepts that are sure to help you succeed in this pressured and unpredictable field: leading and following. These may seem obvious, but there is more than meets the eye.

Once you delve into the real world of business outside your classroom, you will inevitably face situations when you are asked to lead a project, or when you must take charge of the situation unexpectedly. This is the moment when your innate and acquired leadership skills get their chance to shine. As a leader, you not only need to know the goal you want to achieve, and how to construct the plan that will best help you to achieve it, but also how to develop a method of motivating your team members to successfully meet the stated goal. Thus, it is necessary to have a vision. You should be able to inspire your team members with a vision that lines up to their ideals and values. At this point, you should know that the terms "manager" and "leader" are vastly different. Anyone can manage if they're properly educated, but it takes a special type of person to lead so effectively that people truly want to follow that person's plan. When everyone is on the same page, operations are run more smoothly. In addition, you should encourage the creativity and opinions of your members. If your members feel like they are being heard, they are more likely to be responsive, productive, and effective. Consequently, the organization will benefit. Lastly, you must maintain an optimistic attitude. In a world as competitive and volatile as business, it is crucial that you stay positive. Your employees and colleagues will look to you as their rock. If you can maintain a degree of confidence, positivity, and fortitude, these members will be encouraged to fight right along with you. You need to train yourself to see the value in everything that happens, whether it be favorable or malevolent. Similarly, you should view any challenge or obstacle as a learning tool which will ultimately help you, your team members, and your organization grow. Learn to understand the bigger picture and persist!
