Video games have come a long way since the simplistic ping-pong and cascade games of the early 1970s, the later space-age Asteroids and Space Invaders, and the esoteric Pac-man. Today, severed limbs, drive-by shootings, and decapitated bodies captivate a new generation of gamers and gruesome scenes of violence and exploitation are the average. "Violent crime, particularly among the young, has decreased dramatically since the early 1990s," says Patrick Kierkegaard, of the University of Essex, England, while video games have progressively amplified in popularity and use. "With millions of sales of violent games, the world should be seeing an epidemic of violence," he says, "Instead, violence has declined." My arguments for violent videogames are as follows: the violent crimes have decreased, violent video games only affect a small fraction of players, and violent video games are part of multi trillion dollar business industries. As you can tell, I am a proponent of violent video games.The opposition may tell you, violent video games cause an aggression among children. WRONG! Studies may say, 110 college students showed a trial of aggressiveness, but what is this number compared to? A trillion? Also, "college students," does this ring a bell? College students are most likely to be under the influence which may affect the way they behave. That is a mere percent of the audience that plays these games. "One major concern is the active nature of the learning environment of the video game," say the authors. "This medium is potentially more dangerous than exposure to violent television and movies, which are known to have substantial effects on aggression and violence," says the opposing side. Games such as Grand Theft Auto, Combat Arms, Tom Clancy's End War, are not taken literally by a vast majority of the audience at hand. A small amount of people take these games seriously, and act upon them in an aggressive manner.To start off, recent facts and statistics show that violence in general has decreased over the years. For example, in 2005, there were 1,360,088 violent crimes reported in the USA compared with 1,423,677 the year before, says the International Journal of Liability and Scientific Enquiry. With the gaming industry always at its height, we should see an epidemic of crimes, by the amount of sales. Many results and test may show a sign of aggression among teens, but what is that number comparable to. Scientists don't test everyone in the country; they test a small amount of minors. To what degree, can we trust science to lead our lives? If the world trusted science for everything and never took risks, we wouldn't be where we are right now. Violence is not caused by the material in videogames.The right to bear arms is what really causes violence.
