Fifty billion dollars, a number so big most people cannot even fathom. However, that is how much America gives away in foreign aid each year. It is a number that has more than doubled in 13 years; and it is only likely to increase with time. The problem is many countries have not improved since America began sending them money. At the same time, America is in debt by seventeen trillion dollars (a fourteen figure number). America is not in a place to be providing financial aid to other countries until it is more economically stable.
Perhaps the focus in many countries, especially Africa, should be more on the communities and individuals than on the countries as a whole. It has been know that people of all ages are in danger in Africa due to their government. So why then would America send their money to the African government? In Why Foreign Aid is Hurting Africa, Dambisa Moyo states her feelings on governments receiving foreign aid:
A constant stream of "free" money is a perfect way to keep an inefficient or simply bad government in power. As aid flows in, there is nothing more for the government to do -- it does not need to raise taxes, and as long as it pays the army, it does not have to take account of its disgruntled citizens. No matter that its citizens are disenfranchised. All the government really needs to do is to court and cater to its foreign donors to stay in power.
There are plenty of other ways for America to help countries in need. Money can be given to organizations that closely monitor its path to ensure it is effective. This is the safest way to help a country. You will know y money is having a positive effect on the country. A country does not become stronger through financial aid. A country is built on production and trade; it is built by its citizens. However, without the freedom that America has, Africa will never have stable business and will never have enough products to trade. It is time to stop sending Africa all the money their government wants and begin looking for ways to help. “I want to know what leaders did in the last 12 months.” (Ibrahim) Without a proactive leader Africa will continue to be torn down. There are many other countries that America is sending money to, countries that are developing. For some reason a pity has developed for growing countries. Many countries have had no problem with developing their country without any assistance from anyone else. However, “1950-2001, countries with below-average aid had the same growth rate as countries with above-average foreign aid” (Easterly 39). Why would America send billions of dollars if it is not making much of a difference? It is good to help others, but it is better for them to become stronger on their own.
Foreign aid often seems like it is creating peace between the countries, later opening up doors for trade and relationships. Foreign aid often helps prevent conflict and war between the governments. However, this can be creating tension...
