Throughout our history, science and technology continues to expand and thrive. A time period that shows a really good representation of this is during the Industrial Revolution that took place in the 18th and 19th century. The Industrial Revolution was a time of huge economic growth and change. There were some major changes regarding agriculture, manufacturing, transport and technology. The spread of the Industrial Revolution first started in the United Kingdom. It slowly made its way throughout Europe then onto North America. It did not take long until the Industrial Revolution made its way around the world. This event had a major impact on our history. As time pasts by, machinery and technology will continue to improve and advance.
As Mary Shelley was writing her novel Frankenstein, it was during the time period of the Industrial Revolution. Almost everyone was affected and the aspects of their daily lives were very much influenced by this. There was a notably increased in the average income and population. Instead of the traditional manual labor and animal-based economy, machine based manufacturing was really starting to take over. Machinery made the process of production a lot faster and more efficient. It allowed companies to mass produce within a little time frame. With the new concept of a manufacturing economy, technology and machinery began to dramatically increase and improve. As time went on, more and more machines were being built to help improve and make the the daily lives of workers a lot easier on them.
It all really started with the textile industries, the invention of iron-making techniques, and the useage of refined coal. Trade expansion was made possible by the increased improvement on roads, railways and the building of canals. The introduction of using steam power had a large increase in production capacity. It was fuelled mainly by coal, water and powered machinery. This was all used primarily for textile manufacturing. Around the first two decades of the 19th century, the development in all metal machine tools helped increase the manufacture of more production machines. As the Industrial Revolution continued to grow and improve, many new inventions were created such as the internal combustion engine and the electrical power generation. Many new inventions were created to help with the daily work life. Samuel F. B Morse invented the telegraph and Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. The impact of this change on society and the beginning to a new era impacted the human life enormously.
In Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, she demonstrates a huge advance in technology. Victor Frankenstein who is one of the main characters attempts at creating life in the novel. He goes against everything that society is used to and he pushes the boundaries of science. In the society that Victor Frankenstein lives in, being able to create a creature and bring it to life was unheard of. The concept of creating a life was not...
