America has always been known as “ The Land of the Free”. American’s have so many more freedoms than any other country in the world. The freedom to believe in any religion they please (freedom of religion), say whatever they want (freedom of speech), protect themselves (the right to keep and bear arms), and women rights set America leaps and bounds ahead of many other countries.
The freedom of religion in america has always been one of the things that made it seem to stand out among the rest of civilization. It is guaranteed in our first amendment of the constitution of The United States that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” (US Const.) The beginning where “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion” (US Const.) prohibits the Federal government from founding a national religion or involving itself into any religion for the benefit for one over the other. This was created by Thomas Jefferson for the purpose to create a wall of separation between the church and the state. However the “prohibiting the free exercise” (US Const.) is a somewhat of a grey area, if someone were to be apart of a religion where cannibalism is practice, their beliefs would be protected, but the practice would not. “"religious freedom" means the right to believe or not, the right to enter and exit religious communities, and the right of individuals and communities to act publicly, within due limits” (Farr).
In American there is a freedom to believe in any religion that can be thought of. From Christianity to Confucianism to even vampirism, people can believe whatever they wish and the government cannot say anything about it. In other countries this is most defiantly not the case. In China, Protestants, Catholics, Buddhists, Muslims and Falun Gong followers were arrested for proselytizing and providing religious education classes. In India, Protestants were arrested for holding private prayer meetings. And in South Korea, nearly 600 Jehovah’s Witnesses are serving prison sentences for conscientious objection. Currently a woman in Sudan is sitting as a condemned prisoner on death row with her one and a half year old son in Khartoum for not recanting her Christian faith. In America none of these things would happen, people would not be arrested for providing classes to teach their religion or having prayer meetings. As long as no one is getting hurt and there isn't anything illegal going on people are free to believe whatever they wish. No one in America is being forced to believe, or not to believe, something when it comes to their own personal gods. We also need to remember that freedom of religion was a foundation for The United States Of America.
Unfortunately, with the freedom to believe whatever one wishes and, for more or less, to practice as they please, there are many people who abuse this power. Such as the members of the Westboro Baptist Church who are known...
