Over the past years obesity has become of a great concern for pediatricians across America. Obesity, once known as a sign of a disorder that afflicted a very small population, is one of today’s top ranking diseases. It does not discriminate affecting people of all ethnics, genders, socio-economic status and ages. Obese children have to make difficult decisions in terms of what they should or should not eat. They don’t understand why having a scoop of ice cream is unhealthy when they see the other children enjoying it. Why has childhood obesity incidence increase over the past years? Breastfeeding has been the preferred method for nourishing an infant for centuries. Breast milk contains every nutrient needed at this stage, and more importantly the composition of breast milk changes as the infant grows. “Evidence suggests that breastfeeding may prevent the development of childhood obesity because breast milk is not calorie dense like formula and does not increase insulin levels for digestion like formula does” (Stevens, Patrick & Pickler, 2009). Parents opting for formula as the primary source of food for their newborn are more likely to feed the infant at the first sign of fussing. They do not attempt to find out the reason for crying and automatically think of hunger. Also, they want the infant to finish the bottle after each meal. In contrast with the previous statements, mothers that breastfeed try to determine the real cause for fussing before offering food, and let the baby to feed for the amount of time that he needs to satisfy his hunger.
