Full Explanation Of Plant Propagation Methods

PLANT PROPAGATIONReproduction:SexualSexual reproduction in plants uses seeds and spores. And consists of the fusion of male and female gametes to produce and offspring which is not genetically identical to the parent.Asexual reproduction is from budding off the parent to produce offspring genetically identical to the parentMethods of Vegetative Propagation:CuttingsPlant cutting, also known as striking or cloning, is a technique used for asexually propagating plants, which are genetically identical to the parent.Cuttings should be taken from tip pieces that are at least 10 cm long in the cooler periods of the day (morning /evening), with at least 2 sets of leaves. Remove bottom leaves and cut just below the node (the spot where the bottom leaf or leaves were attached to the stem).Place cutting into a pot full of soil or other suitable medium and water so the soil is moist but not wet and waterlogged. Most species require humid, warm, partially shaded conditions to thrive. This can usually be achieved by covering the cutting with a plastic bag to retain moisture and putting the cutting into a bright shaded spot.Hardwood plants such as grapes and roses, should be cut in winter and early spring, soft wood in late spring and early summer and semi ripe plants from late summer and early winterGraftingGrafting is a propagation technique where tissues from one plant are joined with that of another. This technique is commonly used to produce asexual plants that are identical to the parent. The plant that is used for its roots is called the rootstock and the other section that is used for the foliage, flowers and fruits is called the scion. This method of propagation is used for the peach tree on the JRAHS farm. The main advantage of grafting is the resulting rootstocks being resistant to disease, but has many other advantages such as, in fruit tree the ability to fruit without having to go through the juvenile stage, in which the tree has to go through before it can fruit, or to provide a pollen source such as in an apple orchard crab apple stems may be grafted every couple of trees to provide the necessary variety of pollen needed for fruiting. There are many different grafting techniques but the most common form of grafting is cleft grafting. Best done in spring cleft grafting requires the rootstock be split down the middle to form a cleft (hence the name) about 3cm deep. The scion should be cut into a wedge, with a single straight cut for each side if possible. The scion is then slid into the cleft so that the cambium (the layer between the bark and wood) of scion and rootstock are aligned. The graft is then sealed with grafting wax or another sealant.Other types of grafting include whip, budding and stub.BuddingBudding is a type of grafting where a single leaf bud is taken from a plant and is inserted into the wood of another. The time is right for budding when the bark comes away easily from the wood. There are many style of budding, the most popular...

The Benefits of the Sugarcane Crop

1600 words - 7 pages Nickel (1964) and Heinz and Mee (1969). The most commonly used methods of sugarcane micro propagation are shoot tip culture (Burner & Grisham, 1995; Lee, 1987) and callus culture (Liu, 1993). Despite the advantage of in vitro propagation, phenotypic instability has been observed in different plant species including sugarcane (Taylor et al, 1995; Zucchi et al, 2002).The use of callus induction based system often results in genetic instability

1172 words - 5 pages . Jayachandran are working very hard to examine the palm root biology as it relates to conservation. Further, plant propagation is large part of how conservation continues at Fairchild. Asexual propagation and sexual propagation are the two main kinds of propagation; both have their attributes. Within these two categories, there are several subcategories of how the propagation actually occurs. Asexual propagation creates plants that are genetically

1067 words - 5 pages propagation is the practice of rapidly multiplying stock plant material to produce a large number of progeny plants, using modern plant tissue culture methods. The present study is planned to develop an effective protocol for propagation of Gloriosa superba L. in vitro and transplant the commercially useful plant from laboratory to field condition along with evaluation of anti-inflammatory action of the plant.

Plantlet regeneration in Linum has been obtained from hypocotyls (Gamborg and Shyluk 1976), mature stem explants (Murray et al. 1977), and cotyledons (Rybczynski 1975) in vitro cultures, but only the efficiency of hypocotyl segments for plant regeneration have proven (Friedt 1990

Thus, farmers obtain a few suckers that are essentially used to replace lost or mature and harvested plants

Challenges of MAC protocol for UWSN[1] Compared to radio waves used in terrestrial sensor networks, which would have very high attenuation underwater, acoustic waves has better propagation characteristics in water, making it the preferred method for underwater communications. Hence acoustic channel is used as a link for communication in underwater sensor networks. The propagation speed of
