On June 26, 2015, the US Supreme Court ruled that the US Constitution guarantees the right for same-sex couples to marry in all 50 US states. Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy stated in the majority opinion: "The court now holds that same-sex couples may exercise the fundamental right to marry. No longer may this liberty be denied to them." Marriage between same-sex couples continues to be a heated issue of debate in society today. Denying gay marriage affects gay and lesbian couples and lets people think that is acceptable to discriminate against them. Even though same-sex couples are not natural, people should be able to get married to whomever they want no matter the gender because you can’t invariably choose who you fall in love with and everyone should be equal and not discriminated against.
All over the nation gays are discriminated against for many reasons, they are asked various questions such as if they can raise kids, provide a stable environment, and if their child’s development is effected by their parent’s sexual orientation. Statistics show that children raised by homosexual couples thrive just as well, some even better than heterosexual couple’s children. Their families are not really divergent from any other traditional family. There is no evidence that gay couples are any less responsible than straight couples, but people still come up with these ideas and people genuinely believe them. People need to think if they were in that position, if they would want the right to raise a child when they are fully capable just as any other person.
However it is very strenuous for gay couples to both have the status of a legal parent for their child. For a homosexual couple to have a child and be legal parents they have the options of adoption or one partner can legally adopt the biological child the other partner through domestic partner or step parent adoption Gay and lesbian couples could provide stable homes for any child, and could help children in foster homes a lot faster and easier if gay marriage was legal. Even though gay couples cannot procreate they will be taking millions of children out of foster homes giving them a safe and loving home. Gay parents tend to be more motivated and committed to their child because if they have children, you know they truly want to take on that responsibility because they chose to be parents. The lack of support of marriage rights denies children the same protections that the “traditional” family has and negatively affects them by saying that their parents are second-class citizens who are not treated equal in society.
The majorities of teenagers today are being bullied due to the fact of their sexual orientation and is resulting in many children committing suicide because of it. Out of all the students in the U.S., 75 percent have no state laws to protect them from harassment and discrimination in school. Teenagers that are being bullied just want to be accepted for who they are and when gay...
