In Hawaii there was a couple that have been together for 35 years and they only reason they are not married is because it is illegal. If one of them have ever had a surgery they could not have seen each other in the hospital. Or if one of them have been in a serious accident and about to die they could not see each other because they are not related by blood or married. Also if one of them would have died they would not the ability to collect life insurance because they are not legally married. They are now married happily in Hawaii. Same-sex marriage is starting to be legalized in states and accepted by many along with that many people are against the idea, same-sex marriage also promotes change and growth.
November 21st, 2013 Illinois legalizes same-sex marriage (McDermott). This is an effect that will change the future because there is now a new light it peoples eyes. They now can get married. This may seem like an insignificant feat but it is not. Now when someone in a same-sex relationship gets injured they will be able to see their significant other in the hospital. They will now have the same benefits as any other married couple in the United States of America. Even though same-sex marriage will not be officially legal until June it is still a victory in the LGBT community and will not go unnoticed.
When the Governor of Illinois Pat Quinn sign the bill that passed same-sex marriage he gave a speech at the Chicago campus of the University of Illinois. Governor Quinn said that he wanted to help get every states legalized (McDermott).
December 2nd, 2013 Hawaii legalizes marriage equality. The bill was signed on November 13th, 2013 When this law was passed six couples got married at the Honolulu hotel. One couple that has been together for thirty-five years and now they will have the same legal status and any other married couple in the United States. It only took 45 minutes to get all six couples registered for marriage. They all got married and at all of the ceremonies there were several current and former state representatives attending. Reverend Jonipher Kupono Kwong who has performed many same and opposite sex sex marriages go married to his partner Chris Nelson. At the ceremony the governor of Hawaii was there.
With so many people for a controversial topic such as gay marriage there are going to be people against it. Some people that are against topic do not express it public ways. One example is on the day the bill was signed in Illinois Bishop Thomas Paprocki of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield led an “exorcism” for the sin of same sex marriage at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the base of the Springfield Diocese (McDermott).
