Same sex marriage is a big issue not only in the US but in the whole world. Recently, more and more countries started legalizing same sex marriage, but it’s not even close to being legalized and accepted everywhere. People have their own reasons for not supporting it. One of the reasons is religion: “Being gay is against god and we can’t support that.” Others say it’s not natural. And some others are just ignorant and don’t know anything about it.
I am not saying everyone should support gay marriage, but I think it’s not our job to support or not support something that has absolutely nothing to do with us. Gay marriage should be legal everywhere and these are some of the most important reasons why.
First, marriage is a basic civil right. Who are we to deny someone’s right and say their love is not real just because it’s different than ours? What would you do if someone told you that you can’t get married only because some people think you shouldn’t? Every person should be able to marry who they love as long as it doesn’t affect anyone else.
Interracial marriage was illegal in the U.S. till 1967. That was over 45 years ago, but we obviously didn’t learn anything from it. In 1967 in Loving v. Virginia, the Supreme Court held that banning interracial marriage violated the Equal Protection Clause (the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution) because marriage is a fundamental right. So why is it different for people of the same sex?
Some people say it’s because it’s not natural and gay people can’t have kids. Well, alright then, let’s divorce all the heterosexual couples who don’t want or can’t have kids. Some say that straight marriage would be less meaningful if gay marriage was legal. Let me just mention that Kim Kardashian was married for 72 and Britney Spears for 55 hours! I’m sure that makes marriage very meaningful so let’s not let some gay people destroy it. And my favorite argument of course “Gay marriage shouldn’t be legal because it destroys sanctity of marriage” or better known as “God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve”. Well, dear descendants of Adam and Eve, what if my god did create Adam and Steve? Should I still not be able to get married to...
