Over the generations society’s view of women has changed drastically; but these changes are not done yet. It will still take a long time for the necessary changes to occur. The stereotypical view of women is for them to be house wives. Their duties are to take care of the home and children; clean the home, dishes, laundry, and feed and raise the children to name a few. The Huff Post stated in an article, “Women still earned only 77 cents for every dollar that men earned in 2012, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau” (Women). A third process of Sweden’s successful gender equality is “Gender Mainstreaming” (Gender Equality). This principal starts as early as preschool. The Swedish have gone so far as to change their languages from assigning gender to objects that have none to uphold their ideals of equality. When children in Sweden go to school, instructors integrate the principals of equality in every lesson. Throughout their entire school experience, children receive equal prospects regardless of gender. (Gender Equality)
The United States does already have legislation that is supposed to reduce, or even obliterate the gap in pay between genders. These acts are; The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), The Equal Pay Act of 1963, and The Equal Employment Opportunity Act. FMLA lets those persons who are employed at covered businesses take time off for medical reasons and ensuring that they will not lose their job. This person can either have the medical issue themselves, or be a care giver of the person with the medical issue. An employee has 130 days, or 26 weeks, of time off without the possible loss of employment. This act only affects persons who acquire a serious illness or injury or are a caregiver to a person with a serious illness or injury. A lot of people are not even aware of how this act works or if it will even apply to them. (Family and Medical Leave Act)
The second act mentioned is the Equal Pay Act of 1963. This act in fact does state that an employer cannot base pay rate on gender. Employers sadly, will find ways around this. Employers will use raises to make gaps. Employers will claim that the raises are because of an employee working longer or harder hours even if this is not the situation.
