Genetic Crosses
Features of inheritance
What influences you?
Two influences make you what you are at this moment: heredity and environment. Heredity is the set of characteristics that you inherited from parents. Environment is the set of factors that have acted on you throughout your life. Sometimes it is difficult to determine where the influences of heredity end and environmental influences begin. Genetics is the study of heredity and attempts to provide some answers to this question.
Punnet Squares
Punnet squares can be used to predict all the possible outcomes of reproduction (crossing) between different organisms. (pg 136 Science Dimensions 4) Plotting out these outcomes in punnet ...view middle of the document...
Both alleles are present in the offspring but the two traits did not blend together to make yellowish-green peas but instead only one phenotype was visible so all the peas were yellow.
Second Generation:
The second generation was the result of Mendel breeding the heterozygous yellow peas
Research and Technology
There has been a lot of scientific research done into genetics, genetic crosses and inheritance enabling us to understand why we have the certain characteristics and traits that we do, how we inherited them and how we can pass them on. It’s because of this research that we can understand and learn about our genetic makeup and why it effects the way we are.
Technology has been getting more and more advanced meaning that scientists have access to more advanced equipment and can conduct more complicated experiments. Scientists have found ways of enhancing and changing the genetic makeup of organisms when they are forming making it possible to customize and choose different traits and features about an organism’s physical appearance. This is very useful for farmers as they can breed their animals to have a certain trait or characteristic. For example, a farmer may want a muscly cow so with today’s studies it is possible to collect the semen from their muscliest bull and choose the strongest sperm then artificially inseminate an egg from their muscliest cow to produce a muscly calf. They can...
