Food is a vital necessity in order to live; without it we would be malnourished and would most likely die from hunger. A person can survive without food for 30 - 40 days, but must stay hydrated (Janiszewski). Although it is a necessity, many people are still unable to afford the commodity because of the high cost for the healthier food choices, leading to a disproportionate impact over the lower social classes. There are many people who are unaware of the ingredients that are in our food, the process it took to make it, and the long term effects of consuming food that was genetically engineered. With this new trait, the tomatoes could be transported to supermarkets and groceries stores without rotting or becoming overripe (Yowell). However, just three years after it was introduced, the tomato was withdrawn from the market because of public safety concerns and its lack of taste compared to commercial tomatoes (Center Food Safety). Organic food is different from genetically engineered food because it is grown the old fashion way without any modifications that require gene injections into another species. Food is considered organic when it's free of chemical pesticides or ingredients, such as weed killer and insect repellants. If the food contains less than 70% of organic ingredients, then it is not allowed to be labeled as an organic product (American Fitness). Organic food is seen to be the most natural way of receiving food because it has not been tampered by any chemicals.
In order to be certified as organic, the crop first has to be tested to make sure it does not contain any genetically engineered material and the cost of testing has increased heavily. If the crop tests positive for contamination of genetically engineered chemicals or organisms, the organic farmers are forced to sell their crops at a lower price because their crop is no longer considered organic. A contamination can originate from genetically modified organism feeding off organic crops (Lilliston). With genetically engineered organisms affecting organic farmer’s products, many farmers are fighting back by lobbying for labeling genetically engineered foods. Organic foods is a fast expanding market with the sales increasing from “5.4 billion in 1998 to 9 billion in 2001 because the consumers don’t have to worry about health hazards or pesticides” (Lilliston).

Health Impacts:
Genetically engineered foods (GE) exists in our daily consumption of food and is not labeled, but it is responsible for 2/3 of processed foods, 85% corn, 91% soybean, 95% sugar beets, and 88% cotton in the United States (Mullins). Most genetically engineered food is processed because about 60% of processed foods are made from corn and soybean products that were genetically engineered (Mather, Robin).
