Genetically Modified Food is Not as Good as it TastesIn the documentary Food Inc., the realizations of what is put into America's food was appalling to hear leading to some unfortunate results. Kevin, a young boy of the age 2 ½ years old, lost his life to Hemorrhagic E. Coli while on vacation in 2001 with his family. "To watch this beautiful child go from being perfectly healthy to dead in 12 days. It was just unbelievable that this could happen from eating food" (Food Inc.). Kevin contracted the disease from the contaminated meat that was traced back to the plant where the meat was produced. The meat was recalled, but unfortunately by that time it was too late, Kevin had lost his life. Not only is genetically modified food unjust for our bodies, it comes down to the question of whether it is ethical or not to alter a species genetically, in this scenario it was the meat. Genetically modified food can lead to some horrible results, as seen leaving a negative effect on Kevin's family for the rest of their lives. Food derived from genetically modified organisms (GMOs), along with the detriments of genetic engineering outweigh the benefits of these modified substances proving to be not so favorable to the human population today.Genetic engineering, a monumental transformation in the evolution of plants, animals, and other products, has completely altered the intrinsic makeup of the American food basket and what the consumer is purchasing today. According to the FDA, genetically engineered foods are: "foods that are produced from crops whose genetic makeup has been altered through a process called recombinant DNA, or gene splicing, to give the plant desired traits. Genetically engineered foods are also known as biotech, bioengineered, and genetically modified, although "genetically modified" can also refer to foods from plants altered through methods such as conventional breeding" (U.S. Food and Drug Administration). In other words, food products have been manipulated to taste better, be more nutritious, and grow in larger quantities, along with having a lower cost for the food and a much longer shelf life for the consumer. However, since these food and animal products have been genetically altered with, things like unexpected genetic changes can be harmful to a person; Even a situation of interbreeding with a natural organism to lead that natural organism to extinction need to be accounted for. While reading an article about the fight against GMO's, "The biotech industry hopes to genetically engineer virtually all remaining vegetables, fruits, grains, and beans (not to mention animals)" (Smith10). These genetically modified organisms are present in today's economy and it is now becoming the underlying source for what our food is constructed of.
