Genetically Modified Foods Essay

Several decades ago farmers used to grow their crops naturally using traditional methods until the early 1990’s when a Californian company established the first commercially genetically modified food which was a tomato. During those days it was commonly referred to as the flavrsavr and it had been genetically altered so that after it had been harvested it would last longer before it decomposed. Nowadays it is becoming common to find scientists and farmers working together in this growth industry of genetic modification. There is certainly no doubt that nearly three quarters of the Australian people are unaware that they are consuming genetically modified foods. With the increase on debates regarding whether genetically modified foods cause health risks to humans there is no doubt how controversial this issue is.
First of all having researched genetically modified foods and the effects that they can have on human health I must say that it has made me realise that I am against genetically modified foods and the idea that they are artificially made rather than naturally grown using traditional methods. It is not necessary to look far beyond what I am about to say to realise just how bad genetically modified foods are. In our society today it is becoming more difficult to know what we are consuming as farmers and scientists continue to alter the way in which foods are made and grown. The main issue is that there is lack of information that clarifies the effects of genetically modified foods and as a society we are unaware of the means and methods used to produce these foods. According to Professor Bevan Mosely who states that “when we use these methods, we don’t know what part of the chromosome that the new gene is being introduced into and this is a drawback to the technology”. Mosely responded to the question “So how can we know that something isn’t really going to go horrendously wrong? In many ways Mosely’s response shows partial concerns because he understands that using genetic modification methods doesn’t necessarily mean that things won’t go wrong.
According to Professor Phillip James “The perception that everything is totally straightforward and safe is utterly naïve. I don’t think we fully understand the dimensions of what we are getting into. How often do you ask yourself how the food you’re consuming is made, or do you even understand the full meaning of genetic modification. The term GMO which stands for genetically modified organisms refers to crops that are produced for human or animal consumption using biotechnology. Most of these crop plants are modified in experimental laboratories to improve desired traits such as pest resistance, increased viral resistance, and more nutritional content.
