“Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. It's knowing you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do” (Lee 112). The war against global warming is one of the near victories soon to be won by man with no gun. Armed only with his moral compass and political will, Albert Gore Jr. is helping pave the way for environmental justice.
Global warming is the human-empowered assassin of Mother Earth. Throughout all of time, carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases have been added to our atmosphere in small amounts. According to the Keeling Curve produced by Hawaii's Mauna Loa Observatory, over the last several decades we have emitted the highest levels of damaging gases ever recorded. As the atmosphere thickens because of increased emissions, more radiant energy is trapped beneath it instead of being re-radiated back into space. This warming causes our ice caps and glaciers to melt. Imagine a world with a sea level twenty feet higher than it is presently. Coastal regions would be devastated. In China, Beijing and the surrounding area would be underwater. Shanghai and the surrounding area, currently home to more than forty million people, would be the territory of sea creatures. Displacement would be an issue everywhere including the United States. We cannot afford to continuously ignore the impact of our actions on the environment. As living beings on this planet, we need a courageous leader to teach us to listen to the warnings and live responsibly. “Former US Vice President, Al Gore, has been at the forefront for years in leading the fight against global warming” (All-recycling-facts).
On several occasions, the prominent environmental activist has been publicly criticized. His opponents refer to him as “'a carbon billionaire' and accused him of profiting from his work with global warming” due to his financial investments in green technologies (All-recycling-facts). His bold stance in the global warming situation has also been reprimanded. News channels have streamed videos that show politicians' opposing ideas in the matter. American people have been told that this is not a real problem. Congressmen have said that the scientific evidence is not real or that it has been distorted. However, when you research and collect data yourself, as Al Gore did, you get the truth. Al Gore is now valiantly fighting for what the evidence has shown. The Earth and all of its inhabitants are in danger. Action must be taken now to safeguard our future and the future of our descendants.
For decades, Albert Gore has been battling to raise awareness for global warming. In the mid -1970s, Congress heard him introduce his findings; later in 1984, the Senate listened to him submit his case. Al Gore was shocked that our nation’s leaders did not have the same startled reaction he had when shown the data; however, this did not persuade him to surrender his argument. During the Clinton-Gore...
