The Gilded Age changed everyday life for Americans. There were a lot of new inventions. They changed how people worked on farms to how they communicated with family and friends. People came from China and Europe to find a new life here. They left poverty to come here to find wealth. It wasn’t as easy as they thought it would be.
During this time Irish immigrants were coming to America. When they came they were having hard times back home. They came to change their life. When they got here they found out it wasn’t what they expected. They had to go through an inspection. The first thing they had to do was take a physical examination. The people with serious health issues were sent back. If they passed they told them their occupation, their name, and finance situation. Most of them worked on railroads and cannels. They had little didn’t have that much money. They had very little income.
When Germans first came here they had a hard time finding jobs. They took whatever job they could find. Most of them worked in sweatshops. They didn’t have money if they did they had very little money. They came here for a new life so they work hard to have the life they wanted to live.
When Chinese immigrants started coming here they had to go through an exception similar to the on at Elis Island but they went to went Angle Island. They worked on railroads when they first came. Some of them went to the western cities to settle. They also worked in sweatshops and mines. Mines were very dangerous and dreadful according to Stephen Crane McClure’s. (www.peterpappas.com) Americans began to worry that there wouldn’t be enough jobs for everyone. So Congress banned Chinese immigrants for the next ten years they called this the Chinese Exclusion Act. Out west Chinese immigrants still didn’t have it easy. They were discriminated badly. They worked the same as whites but got lower wages. People would even refuse to work in the same mine as them.
Women had to work. Women that were in the upper class got to go to collage. Other women had to find jobs. Some of them worked in cities. Women in the South had to do a lot of extra work since there wasn’t slavery anymore. They had to clean the house and even help with sharecropping.
African Americans had a terrible time in the 1800s. They were segregated. They couldn’t do the same things as white people. They had different bathrooms, schools, and trolley seats. Whites even weakened there political power. They were restricted from voting. Whites had even set up literacy test to prevent them from voting. African Americans were hurt and even killed for no reason. The whites formed a group called the KKK. They used a lot of violence like being lynched. They created a group called NAACP. Which W. E....
