Giorgio Armani

Giorgio Armani, one of three children, was born on July 11th, 1934 in
Piacenza, Northern Italy. Even though he is an international well
known designer, he grew up hoping to become a doctor. However, he quit
medical after two years because he hated the sight of blood. He began
his career in the fashion industry by working as a buyer for Milan's
largest department store, La Rinascente. After that job, he worked as
an assistant designer for Cerruti. He also worked as a freelance
designer, and it was in 1974 he designed under his own name. He mainly
designed men's clothing but until 1975, he began his women's
collection.

Giorgio was the first fashion designer to be on the cover of Time
Magazine since Christian Dior in 1982. He won many prestigious awards,
one of which was the Grand 'Ufficiale Dell'Ordine Al Merito, Italy's
highest government award

Today, he is the founder of an empire with over 1.7 billion dollars.
There are over 2000 stores in the world, selling everything from
perfumes and lingerie to shoes and umbrellas. Armani is represented by
20 licensees and 1 joint venture in Japan. He also has a 100% share
holding in ANTINEA which manufactures the women's clothing for EMPORIO

Christian Dior

Christian Dior was born in 1905 in Normandy, France. He joined the
army and after several years, he decided to concentrate on fashion
designing. He returned to Paris in 1935 and began selling his
sketches. At first, his hats were more successful than his dress
designs. However, he concentrated more on his dress designing and was
hired by Robert Piguet in 1938. He again served in the army and
returned to Paris in 1941 working for Lucien Lelong. In 1946 he opened
his own designing house which was backed by the textile manufacturer
Marcel Boussac.

For his first collection in 1947, he created the extremely popular
"New Look", which featured rounded shoulders, a cinched waist, and a
very full skirt. Dior created a luxurious clothing style which
contrasted the severe living conditions of post-war France. After the
war, he helped to re-establish Paris as the capital of world-fashion.
Each collection throughout the 50's had a theme - classic suits,
ballerina-length skirts, the H-line in 1954, and A- and Y-lines in
1955.

Together with his partner Jacques Rouet, Dior was the pioneer for
license agreements in the fashion business. Already in 1948, he
decided to arrange licensed production of furs, socks, ties, perfumes,
and clothing in regionally separate production centres. This gained
him international recognition.
